Kevin Mawdesley / Red Wharf Systems - Medical Research Supported

FolATED Trial: Member of the Trial Management Group of this multi-centre randomised controlled trial evaluating the benefits of augmentating the treatment of depression with folic acid. Design and development of extensive IT system to fully control the trial including patient referral system, capture of patient interview data, patient screening system, trial administration and appointments booking system, drug allocation and patient randomisation system, collation of data for analysis and GP letters system. The trial management system developed allowed the trial to operate as a “paperless” Trial. University of Wales, Bangor; University of Wales, Swansea and three NHS Trusts in Wales.

COGNATE Trial: Member of the Trial Management Group of this multi-centre randomised controlled trial evaluating the benefits of endoscopic ultrasound in the treatment of cancer of the oesophagus or gastricus. Design and development of extensive IT system to fully control the trial including capture of patient interview data, patient screening system, patient randomisation system and collation of data for analysis. Because of this IT system the trial was considered to be the first “paperless” trial of its kind in the UK. University of Wales, Bangor; Grampian University Hospitals HHS Trust and 10 other NHS Trusts throughout England and Scotland.

COGNATE Quality Assurance: Design and development of IT system to monitor quality of endoscopic ultrasound procedures performed in various hospitals throughout the UK as part of the above trial. Adaptation of web based video streaming system and web conferencing system to allow UK-wide medical conferences live on the web to review videos of endoscopic ultrasound procedures.

North Wales Organisation for Randomised Trials in Health (NWORTH): Design and development of generic randomisation system for use in randomised controlled trials. The GRand System controls remote randomisations for multi-centre trials. Typically taking only a few hours to set up for any trial, it allows randomised allocation into four groups, up to four stratifications of data and has the capacity to cater for unlimited research centres and patient participants.

Peri Trial: A multi-centre randomised, controlled trial of the psychoneuroimmunological effects of relaxation therapy and guided imagery in colorectal cancer. Design and development of participant randomisation and record keeping system. University of Wales, Bangor; University of Hull and University of Wales, Swansea.
